Quick Reference: Pinterest Image Dimensions

video Size:
Full bleed: 1080 × 1920px at 9:16
standard Pin:
Recommended ratio: 2:3

Pinterest recommends a 2:3 aspect ratio for image Pins. Image for Post does not currently provide a 2:3 image canvas.

That limitation belongs at the top of this guide. A size page should help you choose a suitable tool, not disguise a product mismatch.

Current organic Pin specifications

Pinterest’s Pin specification page lists these image requirements:

ItemCurrent Pinterest specification
File typesBMP, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, or WEBP
Web file size20 MB maximum
Title100 characters maximum
DescriptionUp to 800 characters

The same page publishes pixel-based safe-zone insets, but those insets relate to Pinterest’s documented Pin canvas and interface. Check the current source before placing critical text because interface overlays can change.

Pinterest’s separate performance and distribution guidance recommends a 2:3 ratio and high-quality vertical assets. It also recommends fresh original Pins and warns against repeatedly uploading duplicates.

A practical 2:3 image canvas

A ratio is independent of one exact resolution. Common 2:3 canvases include:

  • 1000 × 1500;
  • 1200 × 1800;
  • 1600 × 2400.

Choose a sufficiently large canvas, keep the subject readable on a phone, and stay under the upload limit. Pinterest does not require the first example as the only valid pixel size in the organic specification cited above.

Image for Post’s current image outputs are 1104 × 552, 1080 × 1080, 1600 × 900, and 1200 × 630. None is 2:3. Use another editor for a standard vertical image Pin.

Video Pins

Pinterest’s current video Pin specification says:

  • web uploads can be MP4 or M4V;
  • the encoding can be H.264 or H.265;
  • duration can run from 4 seconds to 5 minutes;
  • full-bleed video should use 9:16 or 1080 × 1920 pixels;
  • other supported ratios include 1:2, 2:3, 3:4, 4:5, and 1:1.

Image for Post’s vertical MP4 layout is 1080 × 1920, which is an exact match for the published full-bleed recommendation. Its square 1080 × 1080 MP4 layout also uses a listed ratio.

The editor does not show Pinterest’s current safe-zone overlay. Leave extra room around important words and preview the uploaded Pin on a phone.

Text, description, and destination

Pinterest says descriptions do not appear in the home or search feed, but it uses them to determine relevance. A description still matters even when it is not visible in the primary card.

Use the Pin fields to add context:

  1. Write a specific title.
  2. Describe what the linked page actually contains.
  3. Use a destination URL that matches the promise in the image.
  4. Save the Pin to a relevant board.
  5. Review Pin statistics rather than relying on generic engagement claims.

Pinterest notes that Pins can gain engagement over long periods and that performance varies with language, location, season, format, and topic. No canvas size can guarantee saves, clicks, or distribution.

A production checklist

Before publishing:

  • confirm whether the asset is an image or a video;
  • use 2:3 for a standard image Pin unless the destination calls for another supported format;
  • use 9:16 for a full-bleed video;
  • keep important content inside the current Pinterest safe zone;
  • check file type and size;
  • preview the Pin and verify its link;
  • write a useful title and description.

Create a full-bleed video Pin

Open Image for Post if you need its 1080 × 1920 MP4 layout. Design and export work without signup. For a standard 2:3 image Pin, use an editor with a 2:3 canvas.

Frequently Asked Questions

What aspect ratio does Pinterest recommend for image Pins?

Pinterest recommends a 2:3 aspect ratio for quality Pins. A common working canvas is 1000 × 1500 pixels, but the cited organic Pin specification identifies the ratio rather than requiring that one pixel size.

What size is a full-bleed Pinterest video?

Pinterest recommends 9:16 or 1080 × 1920 pixels for a full-bleed video. Other supported video ratios include 1:2, 2:3, 3:4, 4:5, and 1:1.

Can Image for Post create a standard 2:3 Pinterest image?

Not currently. Its image canvases do not include 2:3. Its 1080 × 1920 MP4 layout does match Pinterest's full-bleed video recommendation.

How long can a Pinterest video Pin be?

Pinterest's current organic Pin specification sets a minimum of 4 seconds and a maximum of 5 minutes.
