Single photo: ratio from 2:1 to 3:4

X accepts a range of single-photo shapes. The current help page says standard ratios from 2:1 through 3:4 display in full.

Image for Post’s X preset is 1600 × 900, a 16:9 image inside that range. It is a post-image canvas, not an X header or card-validation tool.

Single-photo posts

X’s photo posting help currently states:

  • a single photo from 2:1 through 3:4 displays in full;
  • one post can include up to four photos;
  • photos can be up to 5 MB;
  • GIF, JPEG, and PNG are accepted;
  • BMP and TIFF are not accepted;
  • X scales the photo for display.

Examples within the supported single-photo range include:

Square1080 × 1080Exact square preset
4:5 portrait1080 × 1350Not currently available
3:4 portrait1080 × 1440Not currently available

The range is the platform rule. Calling 1600 × 900 the only “optimal X size” would be inaccurate.

Multiple photos

X can attach up to four photos. The arrangement depends on the number and orientation of the files.

Prepare the set together:

  1. Use a consistent visual system.
  2. Put the opening point in the first image.
  3. Do not split one essential sentence across two crops.
  4. Attach the files and verify their order.
  5. Inspect the arrangement in the composer.

Image for Post exports individual PNG files. It does not simulate X’s multi-photo layout.

Profile pictures

X’s profile customisation help recommends 400 × 400 pixels for the profile image.

Use a square source, but design for a circle:

  • centre the face, logo, or symbol;
  • keep detail away from the corners;
  • avoid small words;
  • test against both light and dark interfaces.

Image for Post’s 1080 × 1080 square export can provide a high-resolution source. It does not show X’s circular crop.

Header images

X recommends a 1500 × 500 header. Its profile-photo troubleshooting page warns that the header may crop by about 60 pixels at the top and bottom on some displays.

Keep critical material near the centre and check the live profile on desktop and mobile. The profile image overlaps part of the header, so avoid relying on that area for important text.

Image for Post does not currently offer a 1500 × 500 canvas. Do not stretch the 1600 × 900 post preset into a header.

An organic photo post, a website card, and an advertisement are different formats. X publishes current advertising specifications for each supported creative type.

If the image belongs to an ad, use X’s creative ad specifications for the exact placement. If it belongs to a website card, validate the site’s metadata and actual card preview. A post-image preset does not validate either workflow.

Accessibility and file checks

X supports image descriptions. Describe useful content and include essential words in the post text when possible.

Before publishing:

  1. Check the exported file is JPEG, PNG, or GIF and within the current limit.
  2. View it at phone width.
  3. Attach it in the X composer.
  4. Check the crop and multi-photo order.
  5. Add an image description.
  6. Publish, then inspect the live post.

Create a supported X post image

Open Image for Post for the 1600 × 900 X layout or the 1080 × 1080 square layout. PNG export works without signup. Use another editor for X headers and portrait canvases.

Frequently Asked Questions

What photo ratios does X display in full?

X says a single photo with a standard ratio between 2:1 and 3:4 displays in full. The composer preview is still the final check.

What size is an X header?

X recommends 1500 × 500 pixels for a header. Its upload help warns that about 60 pixels at the top and bottom may crop on some displays.

What size is an X profile picture?

X recommends 400 × 400 pixels. Use a square source and keep the subject centred because the displayed image is circular.

Does Image for Post create X headers?

No. Its X post preset is 1600 × 900 pixels. It does not offer the dedicated 1500 × 500 header canvas.
